As environmental consciousness increases, many companies, government agencies and private individuals have opted to support renewable energy. This voluntary market is generally REC-based, with purchases being done either directly through a utility or through a third-party supplier.
Organizations and individuals who purchase RECs offset their emissions output by purchasing the rights to green power, which in turn boosts the development of the green power industry. Although it is not required that all homes or businesses purchase a portion of their power from renewable sources, it is necessary for states to meet their compliance needs, and thus acquire RECs.
Heightened demand for RECs from private consumers and businesses continues to feed a very aggressive market – with renewable energy markets currently enjoying rapid growth and development. Green-E offers certification of energy, to ensure the energy comes from its stated source.
The voluntary markets are generally traded by the type of renewable technology and by region. Prices can vary greatly between each market. Traditionally, solar and wind garner the greatest premium, along with facilities located in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) power region.
